James McConvill is the founder and Principal of James McConvill & Associates. James has over 15 years post-admission experience in the law. James holds an honours degree in Law and a PhD from Deakin University in Melbourne. He has published several articles in Australia and overseas in leading family law journals, including the International Journal of Law, Policy & the Family published by Oxford University Press in the UK.

James has particular expertise with mediation of disputes, and preparation of Binding Financial Agreements to settle the distribution of property (especially where businesses are involved) in family law matters.

Julie Asher
Julie Asher

Julie Asher is a Senior Associate with the firm, bringing extensive business experience from her prior career in project and contract management. In her career as a lawyer Julie has developed expertise in family law, particularly in property matters. She is interested in resolution of matters via alternative dispute resolution, and has experience with drafting and resolving Binding Financial Agreements and Parenting Plans as alternatives to court proceedings. Prior to working at James McConvill & Associates, she worked at a generalist law firm where she worked in family law, wills and estates, litigation and conveyancing. Julie has a keen interest in social justice and volunteered at the St Kilda Legal Service, she is also a member of Victorian Women Lawyers-Justice Committee and the French-Australian Lawyers Society. In her spare time she enjoys spending time with her children, travelling, painting, reading and cooking.

Adrian Barbaro
Ji Choi

Ji Choi is a Senior Associate with the firm, having obtained a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Waikato (NZ). Ji was admitted to the New Zealand High Court as a barrister and solicitor and to the Supreme Court of Queensland as a lawyer.

Ji has a Commercial Law and Wills & Estates background but more recently gained experience in Family law, Criminal law and Dispute litigation. Ji is bilingual and speaks fluent English and Korean.

Anita Moretta
Anita Moretta

Anita graduated from Murdoch University in Western Australia in 2012. She was admitted to the Supreme Court of Western Australia and the High Court of Australia in 2013. Anita’s legal practice has preliminarily been specific to Family Law matters. This includes property and financial matters; parenting matters; divorce and family violence restraining orders. She has extensive Family Law experience and has experience in preparing consent orders and financial agreements; participated in a large number of successful Mediations; and advocated for clients in the Family Court for both interim and final hearings. Anita commenced working for James McConvill & Associates in January 2019. Prior to that, she worked for a community legal centre and pioneered an award winning program providing legal advice and advocacy to women who are homeless as a result of family violence. These women have high complex needs; are often culturally diverse; and greatly disadvantaged. In August 2018, Anita was nominated for the Lawyers Weekly Women in Law Awards as a Not-for-profit Lawyer of the Year finalist.

Anita’s approach to Family Law disputes is to assist her clients in understanding the process and give them tools to help themselves. She is mindful of the impact separation can have on a client and aims to reach a resolution in the most efficient and effective manner. Outside the office, Anita is a member of various Human Rights Network Groups, where she works to proactively raise awareness on various social and human rights issues.
Anita is also a member of the Family Law Practitioners Association of Western Australia, and Women Lawyers of Western Australia.

Mila Mortimer
Mila Mortimer

Mila Mortimer is a Senior Associate with the firm.

Mila (“My-la”) is a passionate criminal defence and family lawyer who has worked on a wide range of complex, sensitive and challenging matters for a broad range of clients. As a Senior Solicitor, Mila often appears in the Magistrates Court, District Court, Supreme Court and Children’s Court of WA for a variety of criminal law matters, including trials at the Magistrates and District Court, and sentencing at the District and Supreme Court. Some of Mila’s criminal law experience includes assisting with several high profile murder trials. Mila also has extensive experience in representing both Applicant’s and Respondents in Restraining Order matters and Care and Protection matters. Mila also regularly deals with a number of challenging parenting matters in the Family Court including cases where there have been allegations of abuse, family violence, interstate and international travel and matters where urgent recovery orders have been required. Mila also has significant experience in difficult financial and property matters, including matters involving superannuation splitting orders. Mila actively encourages parties to reach an agreement in relation to both parenting and property matters to avoid the need for contested and protracted Family Court proceedings.

Mila graduated from Murdoch University in 2010 with a Bachelor of Law, Bachelor of Arts and a Postgraduate Certificate in Chinese Law. Following graduation, Mila worked at the Northern Suburbs Community Legal Centre as a Graduate Law Clerk before obtaining her Graduate Diploma of Legal Practice from the College of Law.
In 2011, Mila was admitted to practice as a Barrister and Solicitor at the Supreme Court of Western Australia.
From 2012 onwards, Mila worked in several boutique criminal and family law firms before joining James McConvill & Associates in 2019.


Rebecca Cann is the Manager of James McConvill & Associates.

Rebecca holds a Bachelor of Business (Accounting Major) from the University of Sydney, and an Advanced Diploma of Accounting (with Honours) from Kingscliff TAFE on the Gold Coast.

Rebecca has an immense amount of accounting and book-keeping experience, with both professional services firms and retail/wholesale enterprises. She also has a number of years of practical experience as a paralegal, with particular expertise in family law paralegal work.

Simone McMahon
Simone McMahon

Simone grew up in Perth and graduated witha Bachelor of Laws from The University of Notre Dame. After relocating to Brisbane, she completed a Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice in 2017and was admitted as an Australian Lawyer with the Supreme Court of Brisbane QLD. In addition to her legal qualifications, Simone also holds an Advanced Diploma of Management, Diploma of Event Management and is a Winston Churchill Fellow. Simone also holds a certificate in speech and communication from the Australian Music Examinations Board, having had over 20 years’ experience as a professional presenter and lecturer at state, national and international levels. Simone is a highly motivated, ambitious, and professional individual who has developed a mature and responsible approach to any task she undertakes. She demonstrates strong leadership qualities, management skills and highly developed negotiation competencies with significant experience in stakeholder relationships and team management successfully achieving objectives on time and with excellence.

As a qualified lawyer, Simone has extensive experience in the personal injury and more specifically workers compensation sector, however it is her long-standing commitment to community service as a health advocate and her extensive commitment to volunteer work with multiple charities that shows her true character. Through Simone’s outstanding experience within the professional sector, it is clear helping and working with people in the community is where her true passion lies.

Catherine Hill

Catherine Hill is a Senior Lawyer with the firm. Catherine obtained a Bachelor of Laws from Southern Cross University and a Bachelor of Arts from the Australian National University.

Since being admitted to the Supreme Court of New South Wales, Catherine has practised primarily in family law. She has experience in a wide range of family law issues including parenting matters, financial settlements, and child relocation issues. She appreciates the sensitive nature of family law, and that each client’s needs and circumstances are individual to them, and she works with them to achieve the best possible outcome. Catherine also has gained valuable experience in the areas of wills and probate and criminal law. Prior to working at James McConvill & Associates, she worked at a generalist law firm where she worked in family law, wills and estates, litigation and conveyancing. Catherine has a keen interest in social justice, and is a member of both the General Family Law and General Criminal Law Panels for Legal Aid New South Wales.

Prior to working in law, Catherine worked in publishing in both London and New York. She grew up in Paris and speaks and writes fluent French. In her spare time she enjoys spending time with her children, cooking and travelling.

Chris Baek
Chris Baek

Chris Baek is a Lawyer with the firm and has worked in the family law sphere since 2014. Prior to his tenure at James McConvill and Associates, Chris has been involved in litigation between multi-national companies in addition to developing his practice in family law. Chris is well-versed in parenting and property matters, and has appeared on behalf of Korean and Japanese clients in the Federal Circuit Court of Australia, attaining excellent results. As such, Chris has a particular interest in family law matters concerning clients from the Asia-Pacific region and is aware of the cultural nuances that such clients require. In addition, Chris is a member of the Korean Australian Lawyers Association as well as the Korean Australian Young Leaders Group. In his spare time Chris enjoys boxing, having been a former titlist in South Korea, but also enjoys swimming and entertaining for his friends and family.

Gary Mrocki

Gary is a Lawyer with the firm. Gary has an extensive background in consumer and commercial finance as a finance broker / consultant for 30 years. Gary also lectures at a university level in Sports Law involving negligence, contract, drugs, restraint of trade and criminal law in sport. Gary is also a current PHD student and enrolled to undertake a short course Masters of Sports Law.

Prior to joining James McConvill and Associates Gary was employed for 6 months by the South Australian Government as a legal secretary to five senior Crown solicitors within the Department of Planning Transport and infrastructure as well as a legal intern with the Football Federation Australia in Sydney. Outside of work, Gary enjoys AFL soccer, cricket and golf.

Olivia Pepper

Olivia Pepper is a Law Clerk with the firm; she holds a Bachelor of Social Science (Criminology) from Swinburne Institute of Technology and was awarded Top Graduate for her course, and she recently completed her Juris Doctor (with Distinction) from the University of Southern Queensland. Prior to coming to James McConvill & Associates, Olivia worked for a generalist firm under a solo practitioner; this allowed her to work on diverse files in a variety of legal fields, such as civil litigation, family law, bankruptcy, probate and conveyancing. Olivia has a keen interest in advocacy and has volunteered her time in human rights law with the Asylum Seekers Resource Centre.

Natalie Douglas

Natalie Douglas is the firm’s Senior Law Clerk.

She is a graduate of the University of the West Indies where she was awarded the Bachelor of Laws ( L.L.B) Degree and of the Norman Manley Law School where she was awarded the Certificate of Legal Education.

Natalie assists the Principals of the firm with the preparation of legal documents (including affidavits, agreements and court application documents), preparation of Legal Aid applications, and with the marketing of the firm.

Jonah Town
Jonah Town

Jonah Town is a Law Clerk with James McConvill & Associates. Jonah has recently obtained his Bachelor of Laws from James Cook University and is currently in the process of becoming an admitted lawyer. Prior to graduating Jonah has had experience in the area of Family Law whilst engaging as a Paralegal whilst completing his studies.

Jonah is enthusiastic and eager to gain as much experience from the many staff members within James McConvill & Associates, and is always up for a challenge to learn and improve.

Jonah Town
Sean McNally

Sean has been going to court successfully for literally thousands of his clients since the early 1980’s, both throughout Australia and Overseas. Sean has prepared for and appeared in all sorts of matters – including Family, Crime, Personal Injury, Workers’ Compensation & Industrial relations/workplace law matters – in most of Australia’s lower and higher Courts and has worked closely with many of Australia’s most respected Senior Counsel - many of whom have now gone on to become Judges - over decades in matters in almost all of Australia’s Courts, including success in the criminal jurisdiction of the High Court of Australia in Canberra.

Sean’s skills include: Factual Investigation; Drafting letters and Court documents; Negotiation and Dispute Resolution; Appearing to advocate for and with clients in Court in Family, Criminal, Civil and Industrial Relations matters; Assembling forensically powerful briefs of evidence to Senior Counsel in the more serious and weighty matters where needs be.Sean brings a compassionate, mature and experienced approach to client’s legal hurdles and a strong drive to punch through and win success for his clients no matter the challenge.

Angela Kelly
Angela Kelly

Angela Kelly is a Paralegal with the firm. Angela recently obtained a Bachelor of Business with Distinction and is currently completing a Bachelor of Laws / Diploma of Legal Practice at the University of Newcastle. Angela has a keen interest in Family Law and Commercial Law, awarded first place in the course Contract Law. Angela is passionate about social justice, volunteering at the University of Newcastle Legal Centre and contributing to the Executive Committee of the EMPOWER Mentoring Program. She also enjoys teaching the course Introduction to Finance at university, as a Peer Assisted Study Leader.

Alexandra Phillips

Alexandra Phillips is a Paralegal for the firm. Alexandra is currently in her final year of the Juris Doctor, Masters of Laws at Monash University. Since 2017 Alexandra has worked with the International Women’s Federation for Commerce and Industry, in this role she assisted in the organization of the international trade mission held in Melbourne in 2018. Before undertaking her law degree, Alexandra obtained a Bachelor of Music at the University of Melbourne, specializing in Opera Performance and Musicology. Alexandra has a particular interest in Family Law and has worked with children for a number of years as an Accounts Manager of a music school and as a music teacher in state schools across Melbourne. Her experience working with children has given her the valuable skill to communicate with families who may be experiencing difficult circumstances. As part of her work Alexandra ensures the needs of every child are identified and met. In her spare time Alexandra continues to refine her musical abilities and is a proficient flutist and classical vocalist.

Kirsten Congerton
Kirsten Congerton

Kirsten is a Paralegal with James McConvill and Associates, she comes with an extensive background in Health and Family Law. Kirsten has a Bachelors degree in Nuclear Medicine, a Masters of Public Health, she also has experience in Emergency Response and is still a practicing Nurse. Kirsten is currently studying her Juris Doctor at RMIT and hopes to practice in Health and Family Law when she completes this degree. She enjoys educating and supporting clients through what is sometimes a very stressful process. She believes her own personal experience with Family and Health law assists in understanding what clients are facing and the psychological burdens associated with the court process. Kirsten is also a mandated reporter.

William Marshall
William Marshall

William is a Paralegal at the firm. Having received a Vice-Chancellor’s Excellence Scholarship at Monash University, he is completing his final year of a double degree in Law & Commerce. William enjoys tackling complex legal problems, driving commercially and socially optimal outcomes for different stakeholders.

With experience studying in France and the Netherlands, he fosters productive relationships with his clients and harnesses a mature understanding of the more human aspects of the law. William has a strong background Commercial and Family Law and has recently gained experience in Banking & Finance. In his spare time, you can find William hiking mountains, playing guitar and learning new languages.

James Dance

James Dance is a Paralegal with James McConvill & Associates. He is currently studying a Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Arts (Chinese Mandarin and Policy/Politics) double degree at Deakin University, having received the Deakin Scholarship for Excellence. James has participated in numerous mooting competitions, and is the Managing Editor of an online policy publication, Centrethought. He is heavily involved in volunteer community work, and has also recently joined the Australian Army Reserve.

Adam Barrington
Adam Barrington

As a penultimate year Bachelor of Law/Bachelor of Commerce student at Monash University, I bring to my work a high degree of expertise and passion when it comes to assisting people in their legal problems. Having graduated from Melbourne Grammar School as the Dux of Economics and Environmental science, there was never a question in my mind that I wanted to apply myself to the Law. Most recently I completed my Bachelor of Commerce, majoring in Economics, whilst on a Monash Abroad Travel Scholarship to Lund, Sweden. Here, I was able to complement my studies with an international perspective, enhancing my understanding of business and commerce. I therefore consider myself to be highly adept in dealing with situations concerning business and financial concepts.

Whilst working for James McConvill and Associates over the past five months, I have gained invaluable, practical experience in multiple areas of Law. I particularly enjoy legal research as well as dealing directly with clients’ cases. I continue to study at the same time, undertaking elective units in the Criminal Law field, an area which I am passionate about and can see myself being involved in in the future. In my spare time you can find me on the golf course, cheering on my struggling football team (Carlton), or taking in some fresh air in Lorne.

Angela Crawford

Angela Crawford is a Paralegal for the firm. Angela has more than 22 years’ experience as a paralegal, and has provided legal support in all phases of litigation (including trial preparation and support) involving family law, contract and business matters, personal injury, and professional liability. She is an experienced project manager and is trained to effectively and cost-effectively implement complex litigation support, including document management, review and e-discovery.

Angela has worked and travelled overseas to work with international clients managing voluminous document productions with a team of lawyers and paralegals on several different occasions.

Angela completed a Bachelor in Political Science at University of North Carolina and completed the Philadelphia Institute of Paralegal Studies course in January 1994.


Khaled Wahab is a Law Clerk with James McConvill and Associates. Khaled holds a Juris Doctor Degree from Bond University and is currently completing his Master of Laws at Osgoode Hall Law School in Canada. During his time at Bond University, Khaled founded the Bond University Mooting Association. Khaled was also the Senior Legal Adviser at Bond University’s Commercial Law Clinic.

Khaled has acquired knowledge and practical legal skills in a wide range of practice areas including family law, commercial law, intellectual property, municipal law, criminal law, and traffic offences.

Khaled works with lawyers and paraprofessionals at all levels at James McConvill and Associates’ offices across the country. Khaled’s enterprising spirit, versatility, and passion for the law, complemented by his professional, academic and volunteer experiences demonstrate his valuable contribution to the firm.
